From the Classroom to Client Matters: Ben’s Week at Adam Benedict

During my internship at Adam Benedict, I gained hands-on experience on a range of different matters allowing me to bridge the gap between my studies as a law student and the practical applications of legal work. This exposure to real client matters and day-to-day operations has enhanced my understanding of how law operates in practice.  

From the outset I was given tasks and treated like a member of the team. On my first day I was tasked with drafting hearsay notices - something I had never done or learned about before. The task required careful understanding and highlighted the precision required in every area of law practice. It further provided me with an understanding of how crucial following the proper procedures are when presenting evidence, whilst still attempting to support the client’s case effectively.  

I was also tasked with carrying out research tasks across a range of different topics. This included examining and learning the legal framework surrounding company share buybacks, as well as also exploring employment issues and additional shareholder disputes. I particularly enjoyed exploring the corporate aspects of these matters. The research allowed me to analyse statutory provisions and key legal frameworks whilst applying them to practical cases.  

I was also given an opportunity to develop my professional communication skills as I was tasked with drafting some emails to clients, including a Client Engagement Letter. I learnt the importance of being able to communicate key legal principles in a client-friendly manner whilst maintaining professionalism.  

Across the week I was also introduced to, and got the opportunity to use, the legal software, Clio, and its inbuilt Vincent AI. The software is one of the most progressive and advanced in the legal world and Vincent is AI specifically for law firms, who use it to manage matters from opening to completion. The programme tracks and stays up to date with current ongoing client matters and provides organisation and a clear infrastructure to the legal work. This provided valuable insight into how modern law firms are increasingly utilising technology to improve efficiency and proper client service.  

I was encouraged to explore Sports Law which is a particular area of law that interests me. Using Clio and the integrated AI, I was able to conduct targeted research on the link between a topical case and the commercial impacts of the case for Southampton. Following my research, I wrote a blog detailing the commercial ramifications of the ‘Spygate’ case against Southampton. Having the freedom to pursue a personal interest of mine was a particular highlight of the week.  

Overall, this internship provided a strong foundation in both litigation, corporate and commercial awareness. I am grateful for the opportunity to have undertaken this internship, and the guidance and teaching of the team across the week. I look forward to building on the professional skills I have developed over this week as I continue my legal studies and progress my professional career.
